The Algarve, located in southern Portugal, is renowned for its stunning coastlines, breathtaking landscapes, and diverse culture. But what sets this region apart are its lively and colourful festivals that showcase the region’s traditions and flavours. And if you’re staying near Figs on the Funcho, you’ll have easy access to these lively and colorful celebrations.
February: Carnival Time
One of the most anticipated events is the Carnival Parade, held in February, with the largest celebration in Loule. But parades are also held in Carvoerio and Alte, making it accessible to more people. However, the Loulé carnival entry is by ticket only, so it’s recommended to arrive early and grab lunch before the procession begins.
Easter Period – Religious Festival, Loule
The Easter period is also an ideal time to experience the religious Festival of the Sovereign Mother in Loule. This two-week event begins with the Festa Pequena (small feast), with the image of the Sovereign Mother carried down to the São Francisco Church, where it stays for the entire festival’s duration. The Festa Grande (large feast) concludes the celebration two weeks later.
July – Beer Festival, Silves
For beer lovers, the Beer Festival in Silves is a must-see event. Held over several days, the festival offers a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, alongside tasty food from the many food stalls. Bands and singers provide live entertainment to complete the festive ambiance.
August- Medieval Festival, Silves
The Silves Medieval Festival in August transforms the streets leading up to the castle into a medieval market. Visitors can enjoy BBQs, spits roasts, and street performers while strolling around the historical city. Moroccan goods, arts, and crafts, and jewelry are available for purchase from the stalls.
July – August – Annual Sardine Festival
The Annual Sardine Festival, held in July and August, is another beloved festival, featuring freshly grilled sardines on Olhos d’Agua’s beach promenade. This lively event is highly popular with both locals and tourists alike.
New Year – New Year’s Party Festivities, Albufeira
Finally, the New Year’s Party on Fishermen’s Beach in Albufeira is well-known for its beach parties and concerts during the summer. Many international singers and bands attend this annual party, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
Overall, the Algarve region’s festivals offer a diverse range of experiences, from religious to cultural and gastronomic, making it a destination that truly has something to offer for every taste.
