The Algarve is rich in bird life with more than bird 300 species that can be seen throughout the year. The highlight of the year is the annual October Algarve Sagres Birdwatching Festival. There are plenty of things to do and see during the 4-day bird watching festival, many of which are free but you must register in advance to avoid disappointment.

The best bird watching spots in the Algarve is Ria Formosa (near Faro), Lagoa dos Salgados, the Castro Marim, Sagres and the Monchique mountains. Figs on the Funcho has its own resident crane that can be viewed at the waters edge, not far from both venues. Also keep your eyes open for the rare Bonelli Eagle that can be seen from time to time.

If you hike up Rocha de Pena, a protected reserve near Figs on the Funcho, you may be lucky enough to spot the rare Bonelli Eagle. Another beautiful bird sanctuary to visit is the UNESCO Ria Formosa Bird Sanctuary, close to Quinta do Lago.
