Nature events in the Algarve take on a quieter, more meaningful form at Figs on the Funcho, set beside the River Arade near São Bartolomeu de Messines. Here, we offer a small programme of nature-based experiences for those seeking calm, authentic things to do in the Algarve.

Our events bring together nature, local history, biodiversity and the spirit of slow travel. As a result, each experience feels unhurried and rooted in place. At the same time, we welcome both visitors and local residents, so everyone can connect more deeply with the landscape rather than simply pass through it.

Countryside Walk & Lunch

Enjoy a gentle guided walk through rural Algarve near Messines, weaving together landscape, local history and quiet observation. The experience concludes with a relaxed shared lunch beside the river, creating space for conversation and reflection.

Birdlife Talk & Nest Box Workshop

Join a relaxed, limited-capacity morning led by biodiversity specialists Vita Nativa. This experience includes a talk on local birdlife and ecosystems, a hands-on nest box building session and a shared vegetarian lunch in the garden.

Cat Charity Walk

Take part in a gentle countryside walk led by Cheryl and Graham in support of Mr No Ears Cat Haven’s Silves Street Cats project. These seasonal walks usually take place twice a year (spring and autumn/winter) and offer a relaxed way to enjoy the landscape while supporting local animal welfare.

The route follows riverside paths and rural tracks, and the morning ends with tea and cake shared together. Participation is free, with donations welcomed.
