Watercolour, Graphite & Charcoal with Local Artist Rita Afonso

This art workshop in the Algarve offers adults a calm, creative way to slow down and reconnect with nature. Set beside the river at Figs on the Funcho, the experience combines thoughtful guidance, gentle observation, and relaxed hospitality in a small-group setting.

During the session, you’ll work with watercolour, graphite, or charcoal, choosing the medium that feels most natural to you. Rita guides you step by step, encouraging close observation of the surrounding landscape — from leaves and light to texture and form. As a result, the focus stays on process rather than perfection.

No previous experience is needed. Beginners feel supported, while those returning to art often find their confidence grows quickly.

After the workshop, guests gather for a nourishing, seasonal lunch, shared outdoors whenever the weather allows. This moment extends the experience beyond the art table and creates space for conversation, reflection, and ease.

Overall, this art workshop in the Algarve offers a simple and meaningful creative experience: unrushed, grounded, and closely connected to place.

You’ll experience:

  • Tutor-led guidance in watercolour, graphite, or charcoal
  • A calm, nature-immersed setting beside the river
  • A small-group atmosphere with individual attention
  • Time to slow down, observe, and create mindfully
  • A relaxed shared lunch using seasonal ingredients
  • A finished artwork to take home

About Your Art Tutor: Rita Afonso

Rita Afonso is a Silves-based artist whose work is deeply shaped by the landscapes, flora, and wildlife of the Algarve. From an early age, she was drawn to the natural world and the expressive possibilities of colour and line.

She studied Arts & Multimedia, later specialising in Scientific Illustration, a path that refined her attention to detail, observation, and visual clarity. Her practice balances realism with sensitivity, translating the living world into thoughtful, expressive artworks.

Alongside her own creative work, Rita has built a strong teaching practice. She regularly delivers illustration and scientific drawing workshops in collaboration with environmental organisations, wildlife projects, schools, and community groups, supporting others to develop both technical skill and confidence in seeing more closely.

Her teaching style is gentle, encouraging, and accessible — well suited to mixed-level groups and those who may feel unsure about their creative ability.
