First, Algarve artist Rita Afonso guides you through simple botanical illustration methods using graphite pencil, watercolour, and fine-line pens. Then you experiment with colour, texture, and composition while working from real plants or reference images.

Meanwhile, the peaceful riverside setting encourages quiet observation and creativity. After the morning session, Cheryl and Graham prepare a relaxed vegetarian lunch using fresh seasonal ingredients. Therefore the experience feels both creative and restorative.

About your art tutor

Rita Afonso is an Algarve artist who draws inspiration from nature, wildlife, and scientific illustration. She grew up in Silves and later studied Arts and Multimedia before specialising in scientific illustration.

Today Rita combines careful observation with artistic expression. As a result, her teaching style feels both thoughtful and encouraging. She regularly leads illustration sessions with environmental organisations, libraries, and creative learning groups.

Most importantly, Rita helps guests feel comfortable drawing from nature. Therefore beginners and experienced artists can both enjoy this botanical art day experience.

What you will explore

Saturday – Observing botanical form
First you study a selected plant species using either live samples or photographs. You begin with a freehand graphite sketch. Then you gradually build colour and detail with watercolour.

Sunday – Line and colour techniques
Next you explore the combination of watercolour and fine-line pens. This approach adds contrast, detail, and texture. You may also experiment with limited colour palettes such as indigo or ultramarine.

Monday – Expressive botanical painting
Finally the process becomes looser and more intuitive. You paint directly with watercolour and allow colours to blend naturally. Small creatures such as bees, butterflies, or birds can also add movement and character.

Each day experience encourages observation, creativity, and personal interpretation of nature.
