Botanical Watercolour Painting Holiday with Yoga in the Algarve
Botanical watercolour yoga is at the heart of this small-group painting holiday at Figs on the Funcho in the Algarve. You will enjoy tutor-led botanical watercolour sessions, gentle yoga, and a peaceful riverside setting designed for creativity, calm, and a deeper connection with nature.
Botanical watercolour yoga retreat in the Algarve
This retreat invites you to slow down and observe the natural world with care and intention. From river views and rolling hills to native plant life and shifting light, the landscape supports your painting practice in a grounded, unhurried way.
Importantly, the emphasis stays on process rather than perfection. You will build confidence with colour, form, and composition, and you will use daily yoga to arrive more settled, present, and creatively open.
Immerse yourself in nature, colour, and quiet focus
Because we work with real plants and seasonal changes, each day feels connected to place. You will paint from live specimens when possible, and you may also use photographic references to explore detail and structure.
Additionally, you will have time for short riverside walks, quiet sketching, and restorative pauses between sessions. As a result, the holiday feels both productive and spacious.
A guided botanical watercolour experience
Rita (Silves-based) leads the painting programme with a calm, supportive approach. She shares clear demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual feedback, so you can progress whether you are new to watercolour or returning to it with experience.
Over the retreat, you will explore both classical botanical illustration and more expressive watercolour methods. Most of all, you will work at a pace that supports observation, experimentation, and confidence-building.
Botanical painting programme
The programme may vary slightly depending on weather, plant availability, or other practical considerations.
Day 1 – Classical botanical illustration
You begin with careful observation and accuracy. First, you sketch with graphite. Then you build layered watercolour studies, focusing on form, structure, and colour mixing.
Day 2 – Watercolour and fine-line pen
Next, you combine watercolour with fine-line pen work. You will explore line weight, mark-making, and selective colour use. For example, you might work with a limited palette such as indigo or ultramarine to create clarity and rhythm.
Day 3 – Spontaneous botanical watercolour
Finally, you take a freer, more intuitive approach. You paint directly with watercolour and allow movement, layering, and colour to lead the composition. If the moment suits, you can also introduce natural elements such as birds, bees, or butterflies to enrich the story of your work.
After each painting day, you enjoy a gentle yoga session under the carob trees. This helps release tension, restore energy, and integrate the creative process.
Yoga, nature, and a gentle rhythm
Yoga supports the painting programme rather than competing with it. When weather allows, sessions take place outdoors, helping you feel more mobile, focused, and relaxed before you return to your artwork.
Outside structured sessions, you may enjoy quiet walks by the river or sections of the nearby Via Algarviana for simple, inspiring time in nature.
About your art tutor
Born and raised in Silves, Ana Rita Afonso holds a degree in Arts & Multimedia and specialised training in scientific illustration. Her work reflects deep respect for the natural world, combining careful observation with realism and detail.
Alongside her studio practice, she collaborates with wildlife and environmental organisations, art schools, and libraries. Through her workshops, she encourages close engagement with nature and skill-building through observation.
Accommodation options
You can choose between our comfortable riverside villa or safari-style glamping tents, both set within a peaceful landscape with river views.
The glamping tents share access to a garden bathroom with rain shower and modern facilities. Meanwhile, the villa offers ensuite bedrooms and shaded outdoor spaces for rest and reflection.
Vegetarian meals inspired by the Algarve
